DAMSON (Shropshire)
Extremely old
English plum from Shropshire notable for its exquisitely flavored, uniquely
flavored jams, jellies and other preserves. Small greenish blue round fruit with
yellow flesh. The tree is very upright and will benefit from branch spreading in
its youth. Somewhat self fruitful but will be more productive and reliable with
a pollinator. Zone 5 or protected microclimates in 4. Harvest early September.
MOUNT
ROYAL
The hardiest of the European plums, does well in zone 4. Medium sized
round blue fruit, excellent for fresh eating, also makes preserves similar to
Damson. The tree is naturally semi dwarf and sets its branches naturally
horizontal- very little training with this one. Harvest late August. From
the Montreal area of unknown origin.
STANLEY
Large
oval egg shaped purple plum, very meaty, freestone. Somewhat self fruitful but
will benefit from a pollinator from this list. Harvest September zone 5. From
Geneva New York, 1926, a cross of Agen x Grand Duke.
